Rising from Struggles: Fabia Akter Roshni
“She lost everything—only to find her strength.”
In the narrow lanes of Hafiz Nagar, Sonadanga in Khulna, lived a girl with eyes full of dreams and a heart stronger than her age. Fabia Akter Roshni, the only daughter of Md. Babul Hossain and Rashida Akter, once lived a quiet, content life. Her father pulled a van to support the family, while her mother took care of their home. Life was simple, yet it was enough to keep smiles on their faces.
But life’s cruel unpredictability soon knocked on their door.
Her father fell gravely ill. The strong hands that once pedaled through streets to feed the family became too weak to hold the handlebars. The family income came to a standstill. Her mother, though caring and devoted, had no means to earn. Bills piled up. Meals became uncertain. And Roshni, once a bright and promising student, was forced to leave school. Her books gathered dust, her uniform hung untouched — the weight of lost childhood sinking deep into her soul.
But some spirits don’t shatter. They bend, they stumble, but they rise.
Roshni came to know about UCEP Bangladesh from Sharmin Apa, an instructor at UCEP Mohsin Khulna Technical School. She grasped the opportunity like a lifeline and enrolled in the Tailoring & Dress Making (TDM) trade under the GRIVET Project at UCEP Khulna TVET Institute. It was a new beginning, and for the first time in a long time, hope returned to her eyes.
After completing her training, she began selling clothes and taking dress orders from home. She worked tirelessly, but lacking a solid business plan, her small venture began to falter. Capital dried up. Failure hovered again.
But Roshni’s fight wasn’t over. The Decent Employment Team saw her struggle—and more importantly, her fire—and stepped in. Though she was offered a job, her family couldn’t let her stay away from home as their only daughter. Respecting her situation, UCEP enrolled her in Entrepreneurial Skills and Financial Literacy training under the same project.
It was a turning point.
Through a Market Linkage Workshop, Roshni connected with the generous owner of Neer Mela, a wholesaler who saw potential in her and offered inventory support—no upfront payments required. He shared invaluable business insights, becoming both a mentor and a lifeline.
Today, Fabia Akter Roshni is not only earning through her home-based tailoring business but also has her mother as her business partner. Her father, with better treatment now made possible by her earnings, has recovered enough to return to work. The home once filled with silence and sorrow now echoes with laughter, ambition, and gratitude.
But Roshni didn’t stop there—she resumed her studies. She now walks to her classes, not just as a student, but as a daughter who saved her family, a businesswoman who refused to break, and a girl who learned life the hard way.
She calls her hardships a blessing—they taught her strength, resilience, and responsibility. Her dream now? To become a successful entrepreneur, to mentor others, and to create employment for vulnerable girls who just need someone to believe in them.
From despair to determination, from dropped-out to driven—Roshni is proof that when life shuts a door, courage builds a new destination.
